A substantial bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the calendar year.

The top bid for the 243-kilogram fish was placed by the company of a well-known sushi chain, which runs outlets across the country and abroad.

"An inaugural tuna brings fortune," stated the business owner, a regular bidder at the traditional January sale.

Known as the King of Tuna, this industry figure is famous for making substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic year-opening auctions.

Bidding Surprise and Historic Past

After the auction, the winner admitted to reporters that he was "astonished at the final price," noting, "I had thought we would be able to purchase it a little for less, but the price escalated before you knew it."

This latest purchase tops his own record purchases:

  • He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He spent 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Even after once saying that he thought he "bid too high," he has now proceeded to break his personal record another time.

A Tradition of Exorbitant Bids

The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically characterized by sky-high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a different sushi chain operator, which indicated the fish would be available at its eateries across Japan.

The intense atmosphere at the fish market during these early morning auctions has evolved into a major spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no different.

From Auction to Plate

The record-priced tuna was promptly prepared for diners at the entrepreneur's sushi chains soon after the auction was finished.

"I believe like I've commenced the year in a good way after tasting something so fortune-bringing as the year gets underway," remarked one elated patron.
